Senator Tom Coburn Endorses John McCain For President

"I'd rather put my support behind someone who I think has a very deep rudder, who I think is going to be honest with the American people about the problems that we face ... Americans want principled leadership. They want courageous moral leadership, they're screaming out for that. And John represents that in so many ways -- what I believe is beyond and above the others who are running have to offer. And so I'm going to stand with John McCain because I think he can bring to fruition the solutions to some of the great problems we have." -- Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK)

Excerpts From Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) On Fox News Today:Senator Coburn: John McCain "Uniquely Possesses The Qualities Needed To Change Washington." "I think he uniquely possesses the qualities needed to change Washington. If you look at his career in the Senate, you've seen someone who he has gone against the flow more often than with the flow. Here's somebody who has never offered an earmark. Here's somebody who's challenged the status quo. Here's somebody who has stood up, even when he knew it was going to cost him politically, to do what he thought was right."

Senator Coburn: "What We Need Is People Who Are Courageous And Are Willing To Do What's Best For The Country ... Not Best For Their Political Careers." "What we need is people who are courageous and are willing to do what's best for the country in the long run, not best for their political careers. I feel John McCain has those qualities."

Senator Coburn: "I Think The Truth Is What Counts. ... I'd Rather Put My Support Behind Someone Who I Think Has A Very Deep Rudder, Who I Think Is Going To Be Honest With The American People ..." "I think the truth is what counts. If we're only worried about who gets elected and not what the truth is, then whomever we've elected isn't going to count for anything. I'd rather put my support behind someone who I think has a very deep rudder, somebody who I think is going to be honest with the American people about the problems that we face and offer sensible solutions that do have some pain with them."

Senator Coburn: "Americans Want Principled Leadership. They Want Courageous Moral Leadership, They're Screaming Out For That. And John Represents That In So Many Ways ..."

"The realistic idea that John didn't win Michigan wasn't necessarily because he told them the truth, it was because there was a 15 percent voter turnout and Mitt Romney's family was from there. So you can argue the politics of it, but the fact is Americans want principled leadership. They want courageous moral leadership, they're screaming out for that. And John represents that in so many ways -- what I believe is beyond and above the others who are running have to offer. And so I'm going to stand with John McCain because I think he can bring to fruition the solutions to some of the great problems we have whether it be deficit spending -- you know, our debt is going up a million dollars a minute right now and we're wasting $250 billion a year in the discretionary portion of the budget. ... Why isn't somebody challenging that? And why don't we elect somebody that's going to clean that up. And then we won't be talking about tax cuts creating the deficit, we'll be having a surplus that will create tax cuts and give more money to the American people."

OKLAHOMA SENATOR TOM COBURN ENDORSES JOHN MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT

U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today announced that Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) has endorsed John McCain for President of the United States. Senator Coburn issued the following statement on his endorsement:

"I am honored to be here in South Carolina today, and I am very proud to endorse my friend and colleague Senator John McCain for President of the United States. John McCain and I have stood side-by-side on many issues and I'd like to speak to two of them today -- fiscal responsibility and ensuring the sanctity of human life.

"Much has been made in this presidential campaign about the need for change in Washington. Candidates from both sides of the aisle have talked about bringing real reform to the federal government. But, only one candidate has a record of putting his money where his mouth is, and that's John McCain.

"Since I came to Congress in 1995, I have met one true reformer -- John McCain. He has the unique blend of character, guts, and experience needed to transform Washington from the inside out. He is beholden to no special interest. He is guided by strong conservative principles, and committed to doing what he believes is right without concern for political consequence.

"John McCain has never been afraid to take the road less traveled, and he has fought wasteful spending at every turn along the way. He's saved taxpayers untold billions, and he has rightfully earned the reputation as the Senate's number one fiscal hawk. I trust that as president, John McCain will veto any pork-barrel bill that crosses his desk, and will make the authors famous.
"When it comes to ensuring the sanctity of human life, you will find no one stronger on the issue than Senator McCain. For twenty-four years, John McCain has been an unwavering voice in Congress for the rights of the unborn.

"For those reasons and more, I urge voters here in South Carolina and across the country to join me in supporting John McCain for president."

THE MYRTLE BEACH SUN NEWS ENDORSES JOHN MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT

"S.C. voters who want the president who replaces George W. Bush next January to be a Republican have little option but to support Sen. John McCain in Saturday's S.C. GOP primary. ... [H]e well may be the only Republican candidate who could win in November ... He understands that America must root its foreign policy in robust diplomacy and vigorous, well-trained, well-deployed military forces. He understands that federal spending restraint is the key to relieving the economic misery of the American middle class, that massive new open-ended entitlement programs would be a mistake. And he knows how to work across party lines to forge compromises that work well for the American people." -- The Sun News

Senator Is GOP's Best Hope Of Keeping The Presidency
Editorial

S.C. voters who want the president who replaces George W. Bush next January to be a Republican have little option but to support Sen. John McCain in Saturday's S.C. GOP primary. The gentleman has broad appeal to the independent voters who decide every presidential election. For that reason, he well may be the only Republican candidate who could win in November, bucking the national pro-Democratic tide wrought by the failures of the Bush administration and the previous Republican Congresses.

More important, McCain, R-Ariz., would be a competent president. He understands that America must root its foreign policy in robust diplomacy and vigorous, well-trained, well-deployed military forces. He understands that federal spending restraint is the key to relieving the economic misery of the American middle class, that massive new open-ended entitlement programs would be a mistake. And he knows how to work across party lines to forge compromises that work well for the American people. He could be successful from Day 1 in office.

The other Republican candidates would have difficulty prevailing in a general election and, presidentially speaking, are unknown quantities.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has strong values credentials and experience as a government chief executive. But vigorous pursuit of his economic policy -- scrapping the income tax for a national sales tax -- would divert political energy away from the more pressing need: reining in spending to fend off recession, reduce the deficit and ease pressure for tax increases. And why gamble that Huckabee could overcome his lack of foreign-policy knowledge?

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney grounds his case for the presidency in business acumen. But his shift in position on values issues such as gay marriage and abortion could haunt him -- and the GOP -- in the general election campaign. And as with Huckabee, his lack of foreign policy experience invites dangerous missteps.

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani advocates the same neoconservative foreign policy positions that made such a hash of the Iraq war. And while his executive experience as mayor could translate into a talent for federal administration, he seems, at times, politically inept. He has, in effect, made himself a nonstarter.

Former Tennessee Sen. and TV actor Fred Thompson says the things conservatives love to hear. But it's hard to see how he could connect with enough voters to win the presidency -- and hard to imagine how he would comport himself as president. ...

S.C. voters were unkind to McCain in his 2000 presidential run. This time, they can -- and should -- anoint him the Republican establishment candidate, in hope that GOP voters in the big states holding primaries Jan. 29 and Feb. 5 will cement the deal. McCain represents their best hope of retaining the presidency and retaining a sane political balance in Washington. He earns The Sun News recommendation.
